Unique Welsh Characters  -   Ŵ  ŵ  Ŷ  ŷ

The characters: Ŵ, ŵ, Ŷ and ŷ are available within certain fonts (which include Arial and Times New Roman) but they can only be accessed by programs which allow you to specify "Latin Extended-A" as a character subset in the Insert Symbol function. It used to be that only Microsoft Word 8.0 (or later) does this but now the Open Office 1.0 does it as well and it's freely-downloadable!
Within such word processors you can then set up keyboard short-cuts for the characters. Alternatively you can cut and paste from a web-page which includes the characters you need. Click here for a suitable one.

Otherwise it will be necessary to install special font. Two are available free: Welsh Sophia and Welsh Doulos. These can be downloaded from:

www.wycliffeassociates.org.uk/dl-welsh.html

A more extensive set of fonts is available commercially from MEU Cymru:

http://www.meucymru.co.uk

As far as the Internet is concerned all accented characters required for Welsh can be coded using "numeric entities". See the page HTML for Accented Characters in Welsh for more details.
