Introducing the Book -
The Old Testament Law

WELCOME

Genesis is the book of beginnings. Where were your beginnings? Where were you born and where did you grow up? Where and when did your journey of faith start? Share as much or as little as you would like.

The Books
These books, the books of Moses, are often called the Pentateuch because there are five of them. Although they have aways been referred to as “the Law” they contain a lot of other things as well as rules and regulations.

Genesis – the book of beginnings
Exodus – the ecape from Egypt and the giving of the Law
Leviticus – instructions for the priests regarding sacrifices, public health etc.
Numbers – the story of the children of Israel in the wilderness.
Deuteronomy - “second law”, a restatement of the Law prior to entering the promised land.

The People

Adam & Eve, Enoch, Noah
The Patriarchs: Abraham, Isaac. Jacob and Joseph
Moses and Aaron

WORD

  1. The book of Genesis contains some stories from before history. Read the story of Cain & Abel from Genesis 4: 1 – 16.
    1. Why was Abel's sacrifice accepted and not Cain's ?
    2. What lessons about envy, anger and guilt can we learn ?
    3. What do we learn about the character of God?
  2. One of the most significant rituals of the Old Testament was the Day of Atonement which is described in Leviticus 16. Read at least verses 3-9, 14-16, and 20-22.
    1. What does this tell us about God's view of sin ?
    2. Can you trace any parallels in the New Testament ?
    3. How are our sins dealt with now?
  3. After the Children of Israel had left Egypt and crossed the wilderness they had to make an important decision at Kadesh Barnea which is described in Numbers 13 & 14. Read at least 13:1-3, 13:25-31, 14:1-12 and 14:20-23.
    1. What is your first reaction when you are faced with a difficult situation, fight or flight ?
    2. What was the quality that Joshua and Caleb had ?
    3. What lay at the root of the failure of the rest of the Children of Israel?
    4. Are there any situations that we might face as individuals or as a church which are of similar importance? What can we learn from their mistakes?
